Things to Undo This International Women’s Day

Rethink what we are caught up in- what dictates us to become a complete woman. And undo what’s unnecessary.

It’s International Women’s Day and we know everyone will talk about women empowerment. And we feel women can empower women, when we start undoing certain things. Our society has plastered uncharacteristic and unrealistic expectations into the minds of the women that populate it. In a quest to live up to that definition of a woman, they end up forgetting their true essence and transform into someone they can barely admire or relate to.

Also, aren’t we already done with the cliché-“A woman should be thin, fair and straight-up beautiful. And, that she should follow all the rules that the society lay down for her.”? This trope is old, hackneyed, and extremely sexist.

Therefore, here are some statements that the women of today should eject from their systems forever.

1. UNDO LISTENING TO THE MANY VOICES OF THE SOCIETY

Today’s modern woman should know that she can pave her path, without being hindered by the desires of society and even her family. Women are conditioned in a way that they are expected to keep other people’s needs and expectations at priority, we see the change beyond that conditioning. While bringing the change, she also has the golden opportunity to come up with her definition of being a woman.

She can be one thing or several at the same time. If she has the confidence to be who she has always dreamt of being, then there’s no stopping her.

2. UNDO THINKING THAT HER WEIGHT IS MORE THAN JUST A NUMBER

Because it’s not.

A woman from today’s time should not let herself be judged for the size of her waist or her bum. She should not always adhere to the weight limitations set by this rigid society.

It is sad to see that sometimes women pull each other down by casual body shaming. It’s time that we build a robust sisterhood code, and at least we, if not anybody else, respect each other’s body.

She is different and unique in her weight dimensions, and no one can tell her otherwise.

3. UNDO LOVING OTHERS BEFORE HERSELF

Today’s progressive woman should be fully aware of the fact that she can love herself without being ashamed of doing so.

She is her priority, and she should remember that the love must flow within her first so that it can be transferred to others around her.

4. UNDO FOCUSING ON NEGATIVE TERMS THAT DEFAME WOMEN

Some adjectives that sound seemingly harmless when it comes to describing successful women can be more derogatory than we realize.

Words like ‘bossy,’ ‘ambitious,’ ‘Bold’ may have an underlying negative connotation to them. When used in context to women, they make it sound like something a woman shouldn’t be, but in contrast, you should be proud of being all that.

If you really think about it, a bossy woman who is also ambitious is also the one who has the perfect recipe to remain successful. And you should undo feeling guilty about it.

5. UNDO BEING OPPRESSED

We all indeed feel burdened by the every-day misogyny and the malice it brings along with it.

However, sometimes, we women forget to rethink, reassess, and reevaluate the whole situation so that we can look at the bigger picture.

For example, we need to stop worrying so much about our acne-ridden faces. For all we know or care, the acne marks are battle scars that prove that we escaped a bad skin phase in our lives. We have a life beyond just looking beautiful and presentable. And while most of the people will try to get you caught up in the process of becoming perfect, one must realise that there is more to life and more to being a woman. A life to be curated and grow into a holistic individual.

6. UNDO PRESSURISING FOR BECOMING A MOTHER

And, can we please stop pressurising women to become mothers? Her body, her choice. We’ve heard it a lot of times that a woman becomes a complete woman when she becomes a mother. Motherhood does not complete us. It may contribute to our evolution, but it does not make us whole. We are powerful goddesses who march to our beat.

One shouldn’t feel like “complete” women only if we have a perfect body and pretty. We ought to feel that way anyway. We should feel like complete women because of our stories and struggles, our deeds, and our dreams.

In conclusion, we should rethink what kind of women we want to be in this society. We could stay as we are or become rebels with a cause.

Either way, we should not forget that in this quickly-changing and relatively modern 21st century, we have the chance to be someone who we could not be ten years ago.
